Classroom in the Cloud aims to focus the minds of teachers and school leaders to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the online revolution and the emergence of blended learning.

Alex McGrath, Head of King’s Ely Senior School in Cambridgeshire, argues that with planning and co-ordination, huge benefits can be reaped from new ways of learning, complementing the traditions of British education. He looks at the implications for the UK of e-learning practices and techniques introduced overseas and urges teachers and leaders to face the challenges posed by new technology and embrace change.

Classroom in the Cloud Seizing the Advantage in the Blended Learning Revolution edition by Alex McGrath Professional Technical eBooks

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the future of schools and their role in education. Calling on personal experience, market research and business theory, Alex McGrath makes the case for ‘blended learning’ as the way forward, especially for UK independent schools and international schools worldwide. The author presents his case with some authority as he is currently the Head of a prestigious boarding school, King’s School Ely and is leading the school through relevant change.
The book has 3 main sections with Chapters 1, 2 and 3 dedicated to making the case that change is already underway, citing the huge upsurge of online learning in the USA and supporting this with hard evidence. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 concentrate on the main thrust of the argument in terms of making the case for blended learning systems as an important strategy for schools to make the most of ongoing technological change, where blended learning is defined as any mix of online learning and ‘bricks and mortar’ schooling. The aim is to blend the best of both worlds into a system that best suits the school and its pupils. Since these chapters detail blended learning models, implementation strategies and various options available they almost read like an ‘ How To Implement…’ and I would give 5 stars for these chapters alone. However Ch 7 is full of excellent advice on introducing a BYOD strategy based on actual experience at another school and shared plans for the future at King’ s Ely: A really helpful chapter. Ch. 8 adds an international perspective and Ch. 9 addresses issues for school leadership and, unsurprisingly, those on Headships.
The style of writing is very accessible and the book is written in a rather chatty way, avoiding too much jargon and defining clearly terms used. It is therefore an easy read and the arguments are straightforward to follow. I did get a little irritated by the overuse of the phrase ‘ by the fact that’. It disrupts reading and adds nothing to the explanation but this is a tiny criticism, more than compensated for, by the fact that (I know I could not resist), I now have a much clearer vision, on the possible future for the international school I currently teach in. My thanks go to the author for sharing his experiences, insights and ideas. In my opinion it should be required reading for all school managers and leadership teams.
